Emergency Needs to Victims of Volcano Eruption in Guatemala

June 7, 2018

Dear Sisters and Mission Partners,

On the 3rd June the Volcano de Fuego violently erupted in Guatemala, killing more than 70 people and displacing thousands from their homes. At least 192 people are still missing and over 1,7 million people were affected by the volcano eruption in three central areas. In Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla states, 30 km from the capital, many villages were destroyed, buried by lava, ashes and debris, and 3,000 were forced to evacuate, after losing all their properties.

Our Sisters in Guatemala have been serving the most vulnerable for years, in a country where this natural disaster aggravates extreme poverty and fragile livelihood conditions of the local population.

Strongly committed to their mission, the Sisters are focused on responding to the immediate needs, providing emergency disaster support to 200 people in the next 6 months, living in the communities of “Los Lotes” and “Candelaria”, in the Alotenango municipality, in Sacatepéquez state, and in the communities of San José Calderas and other areas of San Pedro Yepocapa and Acatenango, in Chimaltenango state.

The Sisters intend to meet the most urgent needs of residents by providing emergency supplies, such as mattresses, blankets and pillows (displaced people must sleep on the floor), personal hygiene products, medicines and food including milk for children.

The Sisters in Guatemala need help to fund their relief and recovery efforts that cost 27,700 USD, for the next 6 months. Together we can contribute to support the people affected by the devastating eruption and help them to rebuild their lives.

In this emergency relief activity, the Sisters will be cooperating with the local parishes, following the call of the Bishops in Guatemala, inviting all the pastoral missions to help overcome the current situation by collaborating to start immediate assistance programs for the Guatemalan population.
